More clarity, emphasis on risk and strategy, and validity of at least 10 years, are some of the advantages of renewal in the quality management standard, ISO 9001: 2015.
And to take advantage of these improvements, companies must prepare their work teams.
Alexandra Rodríguez, Director of Standardization of the Institute of Technical Standards of Costa Rica (Inteco), details four necessary changes for organizations:
1. They should place greater emphasis on leadership commitment, that is, they will need senior management more involved with the management system.
2. They should address the risks and opportunities related to the context and objectives of the organization in a more structured way.
3. They should see how to help manage the supply chain more effectively.
4. Allow the development of knowledge in organizations.
Management involved
The ISO 9001: 2015 standard is emphatic in that the quality system exists as a tool that facilitates the organization to achieve its purposes and, therefore, the certification of the standard must also serve that purpose. p>
In practice, this requires a direct involvement of senior management, to avoid incorrect practices such as the delegation of final responsibility on quality issues.
Marcela Ivankovich, partner consultant of the company SGE Consultores, highlights that the strategic role of the standard is evidenced in the incorporation of factors such as context.
“It is fully aligned with the strategic part, incorporating the analysis of external and internal context, as well as the identification of requirements and expectations, not only of the client, but also of stakeholders in the performance of the organization (for example, shareholders, workers, government, suppliers and community, among others) ”, he says.
In addition, this and other standards will now have a high level structure; that is to say, the common processes will be written equally, thus facilitating their replication in organizations with various management systems.
According to data from Inteco, in Costa Rica 135 organizations have been certified under the ISO 9001 standard, while more than 1.1 million certificates have been issued worldwide.
