Changes to the ISO 9001:2026 standard Marcela Ivankovich

Since its initial publication in 1987, the ISO 9001 international standard has become synonymous with quality and continuous improvement for the organizations that implement it. Its high-level structure allows for integration with other ISO standards.
The standard's success lies in its flexibility and adaptability to companies across various sectors (products and services) and of any size, as well as the advantages it offers certified organizations: enhanced prestige, reduced complaints, increased customer satisfaction, a challenge to the system through measurable and achievable objectives, and top management commitment to securing the resources necessary for implementation.
However, the organizational context is constantly shifting due to emerging factors such as technological, climatic, and economic changes, as well as evolving consumer preferences. For this reason, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the new ISO 9001:2026 version in mid-September 2026, introducing—among other aspects—the following new features:
• Incorporation of the ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024 amendment regarding climate change within the context of the organization and interested parties.
• Competence in the use of digital tools, data utilization, and other support media for information storage.
• Enhanced requirements for change planning.
• Separate treatment of risk and opportunity management.
• A requirement for top management to promote a culture of quality and ethical behavior at all organizational levels (encompassing staff values, attitudes, practices, and actions) and to raise staff awareness regarding these aspects.
